But God, this movie was incredibly heartbreaking. It still reels it back in with some comedy or peaceful moments in between the intensity. All three together make an odd yet great team on their journey through Japan.Īnd, of course, Laika isn’t scared to go to the extreme in their plot twists and themes. And of course we have the titular character, a mischievous yet sweet boy learning to understand the joys and horrors of the world. She makes the best deadpan deliveries in any type of scene whether comedic or dramatic, and Monkey’s just an all around bad ass who despite being harsh at times really does care about Kubo and wants to protect him. Monkey is my favorite character with wonderful voice work by Charlize Theron. Beetle reminds me a lot of Kronk from The Emperor’s New Groove with his simple-mindedness, yet he’s still strong and kind. But being a Laika production, it knows how to make the animation, action, drama, and characters stand out. The story follows the typical hero’s quest, moving from one location to the next until all the armor is assembled and making personal discoveries along the way. It brings a lot of high energy and emotional drama, and they couldn’t have picked a better music style. It reminds me a lot of playing the video game Okami and some of the battle and minigame music. And do not stop when the credits roll or else you’ll miss some great behind-the-scenes work the skeleton that GIF only does so much justice. The music is also lovely with the inclusion of Japanese folk-style music. And it broke some new grounds with the first 3D printed puppet to a fifteen foot tall skeleton monster. It’s stunningly gorgeous with wonderful attention to detail in both the stop-motion and CGI animation. Laika really brought the animation to a massive scale for this adventure. I saw this as soon as it came out to theaters, and I highly recommend watching it on a giant screen to better appreciate the beauty. Along the way, he’s joined by Monkey, a charm brought to life with his mother’s magic, and Beetle, a cursed samurai who once fought alongside Kubo’s father, as he grows stronger for an adventure full of twists and turns. Now on the run, Kubo sets out on a journey to find his father’s armor to protect himself from such forces while learning more secrets about his family. Yet when Kubo stays out too late one night, his aunts find him and want to take him to his grandfather to remove his other eye. His stories are passed down from his mother, when she’s not in near-catatonic states and can properly remember them, about his father’s grand adventures before he gave his life for them to escape from the Moon King, Kubo’s grandfather. This time they bring us an adventure with an action-packed quest and intense emotional drama to keep your eyes glued to the screen.Įleven-year-old Kubo spends most of his time taking care of his ill mother and telling stories to villagers with his shamisen and magical origami. Let’s wrap up with Laikia’s latest film, Kubo and the Two Strings. ![]() **Reposted from my Tumblr, elizas-writing, as of December 6th, 2018** ![]()
